Well, last night's post was a cheery bugger, wasn't it?

This morning I am rather cheerier, though the headache suggests that once again, too much cider happened. But I got to pass out on the bed, wake up and transfer myself into hte bed, wake up again, remove dressing gown and glasses and pass out once more and to have some lovely dreams involving pirates. And the mafia.

Go away, you darned headache.

Much molly dancing has happened and it was all amazing fun. I think part of today will involve putting photos on Flickr and some videos on YouTube. Hurrah for pointless activities! I shall also be looking for my passport so I can possibly go to Syria later this year...

Look out for molly photos, coming soon to an LJ near you!

Sometimes I complain about my subject. There's just something about studying the first language ever written down, which is not fully understood by experts (let alone lowly undergraduates) and which has a grammatical system like nothing else you'll ever see that can, just occasionally, drag you down a bit. Not to mention the archaeological theory we are trying to teach ourselves in our spare time, since no-one has thought to give us a lecture on it or anything...

And then something happens which reminds me just how full of joy not just Assyriology, but the entire world is. And how silly!
I found the Sumerian for "sparrow" the other day. It is "bizazagubalaĝakargirzana". Apparently, this is the nickname for sparrow.
The word is amazing in itself, but it's not the best bit. It appears in a list of proverbs. Sumerian proverbs are utter genius, full of allusions which were presumably perfectly natural to the contemporary population but shrouded in mystery now. This particular proverb set contains lines such as:

"A fox walked around a throw-stick: "Who is going to give a party as good as that?""
"A fox was scrabbling in a dyke: "Nobody has ever seen my bent-over behind." "
and, best of all:
"Someone cooking (?) meat at the den (?) of a fox said: "One doesn't mention this in front of the mongoose." "

Who can't love a people that can come up with such joyous randomness as that?

I also discovered the Sumerian for an imperial shitload, which is something like "144 000 fold". I think I might start using that instead of the original, actually...

So it's official: I love Sumerian. You heard it here first...

(I'll regret this)
